What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about dance and dance fitness inspired workouts. That’s why I became a teacher. Not only does it work the body, it works the heart and mind as well as nurturing the spirit and soul! Most of all it is so much fun! I love watching people let go of their inhibitions, any tensions and stress, grow in confidence and coordination, become motivated and the massive smiles on their faces during and after class. The health benefits of dance is what changed my life and I get so much reward from seeing the same impact on others.
Why did you choose to work in the health industry?
I was actually asked to work in the industry. I’ve always loved a variety of physical activity, running, surfing and dancing as well as being a regular participant at the gym. For me exercise is more about the way it makes me feel rather than how I look. The opportunity to train as a Zumba Instructor came up and I happily embraced it! Mind you after the training I had my doubts as to wether I could actually teach it. A great deal of hard work, dedication and ‘never give up’ attitude got me there! Now proud to also be teaching Barre and most recently Beats. Love it!
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve overcome in your life?
As a young person I was overweight, lacking in confidence and suffering from low self esteem. I developed an unhealthy obsession with food and had a great deal of negative self talk. Many goals I had set I did not believe I could achieve. When I chose to no longer be a victim and free myself from this mindset everything fell into place! I completed a Science Degree in Biology, got my first job in Microbiology and adopted a healthy lifestyle full of physical activity, healthy eating, hobbies and interests. I’m so grateful I challenged my thoughts and feelings back then.
If you could give one word of advice what would it be?
Fun!! Have Fun! I think sometimes with our hectic life and schedules we forget to do this! Find the things you really enjoy doing and make the time to do it!
What is the most powerful quote you have heard?
I really believe in the power of positivity.
– ‘The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible.’- Winston Churchill
‘One small positive thought in the morning can change the entire outcome of your day!’- Dalai Lama
Do you have an ethos you live by?
Balance! Creating time for things I have to do as well as things I like to do. Making time to nurture relationships with family and friends.
If you could invite any three people over for dinner (dead or alive) who would they be?
Dinner with Beto Perez, the creator of Zumba. You know there would be a party after dinner! Bob Marley, travelled to Jamaica a few years ago, his presence is so alive there, through music, quotes tourist attractions. The Dalai Lama, have read a couple of his books, he just exudes love and joy! Want to give him a big hug!
