Natural Treatments for Headaches

Experiencing that throbbing, pulsating, stabbing, or squeezing discomfort that we get during headaches is not something we look forward to, right?! It’s something I’m pretty sure no one would like to encounter, let alone be stuck with for more than 15 minutes. Having a headache disrupts our ability to accomplish tasks and simply get on with our day.

In today’s standards, most people would just go ahead and buy an aspirin, or a paracetamol, to rid themselves of headaches. Natural remedies aren’t as expensive and are safer for the body with their various natural benefits.

Headaches can sometimes be caused by chronic inflammation. Inflammation is generally good, as it helps in repairing damaged tissues and in fighting off infections. But chronic inflammation causes problems by activating the body’s immune response, causing inflammation for no apparent reason. Cinnamon has potent anti-inflammatory properties thanks to its antioxidants, effectively alleviating the symptoms.

To use cinnamon, all you have to do is to make a thick paste by grinding some cinnamon sticks into a powder, and mixing them with water. Then, you apply it on your temples and forehead, and lie down for 30 minutes. Wash the paste off with lukewarm water once 30 minutes is up. You could also try cinnamon essential oil.

The basil plant, scientifically known as Ocimum basilicum, has long been renowned as a healing herb in India, where Tulsi (A.K.A. “Holy Basil”) is commonly prescribed as a herbal remedy for anxiety. It has both antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which makes it a brilliant healing agent for topical ointments. The leaves also have many analgesic benefits, and works as a muscle relaxant that helps alleviate headaches caused by tension, and tight muscles.

To start enjoying its benefits, simply put 3 or 4 fresh basil leaves in a cup of boiling water. Add a little bit of honey and sip the tea slowly. You can also inhale its steam by boiling basil in a pot of water, or simply chew on some fresh basil leaves.

The saying “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away,” is very true. Apples are known to be jam-packed with flavonoids, which helps reduce blood pressure, thus minimizing the amount of pain one can experience from headaches. They also restore the acid-alkaline balance in a person’s body.

There are many more natural remedies available for you out there. You can opt for stretching, using scents, and practising breathing exercises. So before you pop a tablet of aspirin or paracetamol, remember to try these natural remedies first, and try to heal your body in the natural way.
